2520 Years After Babylon

Described in TWO places in Daniel --Daniel 4:23 and Daniel 5:25-- Babylon was prophecied to be punished for 2520 years. Let's cover Daniel 5:25 first.

Daniel 5:25 (The writing on the wall prophecy) "And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN."

This part of Daniel is written in Aramaic. In Aramaic mene means numbered. Tekel: weighed in the balance and found wanting. Upharsin: divided. But the three words --mene, tekel, upharsin, seem to have double meanings as coins.

A mene is also a mina, which is 50 shekels.

Multiple 50 shekels by 2 (because mene is repeated) = Running total of 100 shekels

Tekel = 1 shekel. Running total = 101 shekels

Upharsin = 25 shekels. Running total = 126 shekels

Now multiply 126 by 20 (because a shekel is made up of 20 gerahs -see Ezek. 45:12) = Total 2520

This is equivalent to 2520 years punishment because of other places in the Bible that use the number 2520 this way, although in those cases they use the principle of a DAY for a year. (See Numbers 14:34 and Ezekiel 4:6.)

Now let's look at Daniel 4:23 (The prophecy about the tree stump regrowing)

Daniel 4:23
"And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him"

Most Bible prophecy is at least dual in it's fulfilment. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, did fulfil this prophecy in person. But much of the book of Daniel is concerned with the fate of nations. This prophecy also ties in with the fate of Babylon, as covered above. Although the actual city of Babylon was prophecied to sink and never to rise again (Jeremiah 51:37,43) succeeding empires that come afterwards, such as the last revival of the Roman empire are symbolised by Babylon in the book of Revelation, where the city of Babylon is used as a metaphor to name the ruling power in the end time (See Rev. 18:10-13). The name Babylon is not restricted to the original city.

Regarding the Babylonian empire, AFTER 7 TIMES can also mean AFTER 2520 YEARS (7 x 360 prophetic days).... SO DANIEL 4:23 IS SAYING THAT AFTER 2520 YEARS THE BAND OF IRON RESTRAINING BABYLON IS REMOVED, AND THE DORMANT TREE STUMP BEGINS TO GROW AGAIN.

When does 2520 years calculate to?

Babylon fell around September 539 BC. (Read Wikapedia entry for Babylon, under the heading Persia captures Babylon.)

Using the first method above to calculate this (adjusting for the absence of year zero), 2520 years from 539 BC comes to AD 1982. However, we should further adjust this by going backwards in time for two, or perhaps even three more years, because: (1) The Jews often count inclusively, instead of away from for any given date, which could take this prophecy back one year (to 1981). (2) The present Gregorian calendar we use today is nine months ahead of the Jewish calendar (the reason being that the Jewish succession of years begins in Tishri, towards the end of our September, nine months after our Gregorian year starts). This takes us back at least another year, to 1980, for prophecy fulfilments to be accurate... In other words, any Jewish prophecy we look at that occurs up to late September on our Gregorian 1981 calendar, is equivalent to1980 when translated from Jewish chronology. (3) Some Jewish chronology equivalents for 1981 might actually translate back to October, November, December 1979. Because in history, chronology for around September/October of any year might possibly be listed incorrectly using our version of the year today, as Babylon fell to Cyrus at the Battle of Opus around September/October of 539 BC, which is near the turn of the Jewish year. Although someone may correct me on this, I'm speculating that it may have technically been the year before, in 540 BC (counting backwards the year number increases). So 2520 years after the Daniel 5:25 writing on the wall may actually calculate out to AD 1979. In 1979 a number of important events DID occur that seem to pertain to this prophecy. As with the controversial date of Christ's crucifixion, a complete understanding of the fulfilment of 2520 years seems to be hidden at this time, however I believe world events for 1979 DO fit this prophecy, as listed further down.

This also ties in with the Nebuchadnezzar image, or statue prophecy in Daniel Chapter 2. This prophecy portrays succeeding empires after Babylon, and indicates the prophesied legs of iron in the image were fulfilled by the Roman empire in history. However Revelation 13 and Revelation 17 show that "Rome" revives a total of 7 times in later history and prophecy, and the 6th. revival was fulfilled by Mussolini and Hitler in World War II. In future prophecy, the 7th head of the "beast" has 10 horns, which are the same as the10 toes of the statue in Daniel 2. In other words "Rome" will be resurrected one last time at the end of the age, before the stone (Christ) smites the feet of the statue described in Daniel chapter 2, and fills the whole earth with God's government after Christ returns.

The last revival of this Gentile kingdom may be formed when the stump begins to grow again at the end of the 2520 period, which DOES happen to fit world events in 1979!

In 1979 the European Monetary System (EMS) was introduced, setting Europe on the road towards the euro.

In the same year, Europeans also voted in the first direct elections to the European Parliament.

There may also be another aspect to the 2520 year prophecy:

The original Babylonian empire was located in the area that today is known as Iraq and also extended into Iran. (Babylon was founded by Nimrod, way back in Genesis --see Genesis 10:8-10.) Again, events in 1979 fit this prophecy.

They demand that the United States send the former Shah of Iran back to stand trial. (It was claimed that the current President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was part of the group of hostage takers, but most sources say that allegation is false. See Wikipedia article here.)

CONCLUSION

The European monetary system may soon play a big role in reforming the world's financial system. If this proves to be a vital part in bringing about the last resurrection of the end time Roman Empire, then 1979 may have been the prophecied starting point.

Also, Islam first originated in the 7th century, long AFTER Babylon, however it is now the religion for the geographic location of the old Babylonian empire. 1979 seems to be the year that began the emergence of Islam as the power of this region that troubles Israel in the end time (as well as the Biblical birthright nations of Joseph, which includes Britain and the USA - see prophecy book here), and I think this may have been included in these prophecies about the rising of Gentile powers as well.

In the final outcome of prophecy, BABYLON is pictured as a TYPE, representing
dominant world powers in the end time...
However, like the Titanic, the Bible says, in Revelation 18:10-13, that Babylon is DOOMED.
